UT junior Ed Corrie successfully runs through the singles draw without dropping a set.
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas junior Ed Corrie finished his brilliant five-day run through the main singles draw at the ITA Texas Regional Championships with a straight-set win over Texas Tech’s 25th-ranked Raony Carvalho in the finals Wednesday at Texas A&M’s Mitchell Tennis Center.
A day after defeating Baylor’s 27th-ranked Jordan Rux in the quarterfinals, Corrie (Harpendon, England) made short work of another highly-ranked foe with his 6-4, 6-1 win over Carvalho. Corrie becomes the first Texas player under head coach Michael Center to win the main singles draw at the ITA regional event.
“Ed had a game plan today, and he went out and executed it,” said Center, now in his 10th season at Texas. “I’m really pleased with Ed’s play from this entire tournament. He did not lose a set. From start to finish, this was a great effort for him. He continued to play aggressively and with a lot of confidence. He had to go through a couple of ranked opponents to win this tournament, and that was quite an accomplishment.”
Corrie secures an automatic singles berth into next month’s ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, where he likely will be joined by UT senior Dimitar Kutrovsky. Corrie, Kutrovsky and the rest of the Longhorns resume play on Friday, Oct. 30 when they host the annual three-day Texas Invitational at UT’s Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
